What is Voki for Education?

"Voki is a free service that allows you to create personalized speaking avatars and use them on your blog, profile, and in email messages.

The Teacher's Corner includes:
• Voki Tips and Discussion: Many educators are using Voki in creative and clever ways, find out how.
• Introduce Yourself: We what to get to know you better. Tell us about you and your school. Feel free to add a link to your blog so we can keep up with your wisdom.
• Newbie's Corner: This is the place for our experienced educators to help support our new users and bring them up to speed. All questions are acceptable, so visit the Newbie's Corner and ask away! Soon enough, you will be the one supporting the newbies.

Class Mascot: You can create a Voki avatar to use as a class mascot or a puppet. You can decide on the character with the kids or you can create a suitable avatar for the children. You can change the background and it can be your classroom picture. You can decide on the name of your puppet with the kids or the puppet/mascot can introduce himself/herself to the class. Before the day starts, you can make the puppet/mascot talk about the weather, day, month, seasons or it can talk about the activities that they will be doing during the day. When the children are familiar with Voki, you can assign one student everyday to make the puppet talk using text-to speech feature or recording his/her voice.

Treasure Hunt: You can play treasure hunt with your students. Your Voki avatar can give the directions to the kids to find the treasure that you have hidden in the classroom. You can write the directions at the same time by using text-to speech activities or you can record your voice beforehand.

Interact: Use Voki avatars to ask questions to the kids or make the kids ask questions to Voki avatar. It's a great way to practice the learnt language and improve speaking skills. Children love interacting with a Voki avatar other than answering the questions you ask them.

Journal: Children can create their own avatars and keep a journal by recording their own voices or again using text-to-speech application. You can place (embed) all the avatars on one page and you can ask the kids to change the recording of the avatar every day and talk about what they did on previous day. Each child can listen to each other. It's a good speaking activity and a good way for kids to hear their pronunciation.

Teamwork: Children can do pair work and they can exchange their Voki avatars or they can be like online pen friends for each other and they leave messages to each other every day/week by recording their voices. You can also collaborate with other teachers to find e-pals for your kids.

Story Telling: Create a Voki and start telling a story and ask the children to write the end of the story. They can also create Voki at home and record their voices by telling the end of the story or retell a story you did in class.

Holiday Wishes: Children can leave messages for special days such as birthdays, Christmas or they can record their wishes for Mother's Days or Father's Day.

Class Blog: If you have a class blog or a website, you can create a Voki and welcome children or the parents to the blog. You can talk about yourself and what you aim at using the blog or you can remind their homework by a Voki avatar.

Songs: You can ask the children to sing songs and you can have a song contest. They can record their voices while they are singing their songs and the children can vote for the ones they like most.

Discussion: You can ask the children to talk about their likes, their favorites or simply about anything you teach in the classroom.

Projects: Instead of asking children to create a project on paper, you can ask them to tell their projects using a Voki avatar and it's certainly more eco-friendly.

News Reports: You can ask the children to report news as if they are the newsreader. Each child can take turns in being the newsreader.

Voki Quiz: Create an avatar and record your voice beforehand. Show the Voki avatar to the kids and write some questions about the avatar such as "How old is she?" "What is her favorite color?" etc. and ask the children to write down their guesses to those questions. When they finish writing, they can read aloud their guesses. When they all finish speaking, let the Voki avatar speak and check who has got the true answers to the questions.

Announcements: You can use Vokis for announcements about class or praising the kids instead of giving them certificates, stars or stickers."

A bot is a computer program that is designed to stimulate a logical conversation with human users via text, audio or both. Check out the possibilities for your students

Bot Morpheus is a bot that can write and speak at the same time. The answers are logical, it also asks questions and analyze your answers.

Bell stands for Bot for English language learning. It can answer some math questions, talk about the countries and even make some jokes. You can hear Bell talking too.

Jenny the bot is a child bot that learns from the conversation. It takes her only 10 seconds to answer the questions. You have to use long and meaningful sentences, your conversation should be engaging and you have to talk decently, otherwise Jenny will block you off.

Shakespeare has an interactive bot that assists the learning and working of Shakespeare. It can also handle image and file requests and it provides Shakespearean word glossary with huge information on his various plays.

Santa has a bot too, you can talk to him and ask what you wish to have in the first place for Xmas.

Eliza is programed as a psychotherapist and an interesting example of the artificial intelligence programs. This bot is one of the earliest bots that has been developed.

Jabberwacky is another artificial intelligence that learns from every word you write. He understands more than 30,000 words and more than 2,200,000 sentences.

Here comes a MathBot that will only answer your questions about math. It can answer simple problems such as addition,division, multiplication etc.

Marc is a bot that remembers you and your conversation when you log in the next time.

Splotchy is a friendly and a funny bot and he can be amazingly intelligent. He may be cranky sometimes but if he is in a good mood he can be flirty too.

Six Visual Dictionaries and Thesauri

Here are six visual dictionaries and thesauri that can help your students better understand the meanings of words.

Snappy Words is a free visual dictionary and thesaurus. Enter any word or phrase into the Snappy Words search box and it will create a web of related words, phrases, and definitions. Hover your cursor over any word or phrase in the web to read its definition. Click and drag any node to explore other branches of the web. Double click on a node and it will generate new web branches.
Visuwords uses a web design to show users the definitions of words and the connections between words. To use Visuwords just type a word into the search box and Visuwords will generate a web of related words. Place your cursor over any of the words and the definition appears. Use the color-coded key to understand the connections between the words in any web.
Lexipedia, like Visuwords, provides the definitions of words along with a webbed diagram of related words and their definitions. In addition to definitions and diagrams, Lexipedia offers audio pronunciations of words although when I tested it the audio didn't seem to be working properly. In my side-by-side comparison of Lexipedia and Visuwords, both performed equally well, but occasionally offered different definitions and connections for the same word.
Merriam Webster's Visual Dictionary is divided into fifteen thematic categories containing more than 6,000 words defined and accompanied by images. You can find words and definitions by browsing through the categorized images or by using the text search bar.
Wordia is a free visual, video dictionary. Wordia features a selection of user-submitted and professionally created videos explaining the meaning of a word. The videos focus on the everyday use of words while the text accompanying each video provides the dictionary definition of the word.
Got Brainy features two sections; Brainy Flix and Brainy Pics. Brainy Pics is comprised of images that demonstrate the meaning of a word. Most of the pictures are submitted by students. Brainy Flix is comprised of short videos that illustrate the meaning of words. Just like with Brainy Pics, most of the videos are submitted by students.

These usually include tools that let people collaborate and share information online, such as social networking sites, wikis, communication tools, and folksonomies. Five Alternatives to Traditional Book Reports

1. Create book trailers. I ran a post about book trailers during the summer which you can read here. In short, a book trailer is a short video created by students to highlight the key points of a book. When creating their book trailers students should be trying to "sell" viewers on a book. To create their videos your students could use Animoto for Education, JayCut, or PhotoPeach. Learn more about these free video creation tools in my free guide Making Videos on the Web.

2. Create animated or stop-motion videos about a book's plot. To make an animated video try Memoov which is a free service that your students can use to create an animated video book review. Memoov allows users to create animated videos up to five minutes in length. Creating an animated video with Memoov can be as simple as selecting a setting image(s), selecting a character or characters, and adding dialogue.

If stop-motion videos are more your speed, Kevin Hodgson's Making Stopmotion Movies is a fantastic resource for directions and advice on making stop-motion movies.

3. Create literature maps. Using Google Maps or Google Earth students can map out the travels of character in a story. Google Lit Trips has many examples of teachers and students using Google Earth in literature courses. If you're not familiar with how to create placemarks in Google Maps, please see my free guide Google for Teachers for directions.

4. Create 3D augmented reality book reviews. ZooBurst is an amazing service that allows you to create a short story complete with 3D augmented reality pop-ups. Students could use ZooBurst to create short summaries of books that really jump off the screen.

5. Create multimedia collages about books. Glogster allows users to create one page multimedia collages. Students could create a collage containing videos, audio files, text, and images about books they've read. For example, a Glog about Into the Wild could contain images of Chris McCandless, chunks of text about the book, and this video featuring a song from the movie based on the book.

This article focuses on Free Online Video Games for ESL Students’ Language Skills

The online games that the author uses with students fall into several categories – escape the room, adventure, choose your own adventure, and hidden object. However, not all games that are labeled with those descriptions provide good language development experiences, and additional criteria. One, they must be both free and online but not require any downloading, as this can be problematic for school computers. Two, they must have no sexual content and, if there is any violence, in my judgment it’s at a level appropriate for teenagers. Lastly, the games must have a fair amount of English text shown and, ideally, spoken in the course of the game.
